Pump Up Your Creativity in 2011

5 Jan

So this is not REALLY a typical techno wizzy, social media-esque My Mom’s Guide type post but I think it is important nonetheless. The following article I found on Huffington Post invites its reader to get kick ass creative – and for YOU, that could mean having the creative courage to step outside your bubble into the today’s world of “flying cars and robot helpers” and try something technologically new. {tongue in cheek, people, tongue in cheek}

My 2011 resolution, nay, my 2011 suggestion is to not live in fear and as Mary Beth Maziarz says “Each new year brings a fantastic opportunity to assess where we are, where we’ve been and where we want to go next with our lives.”  In her article,  4 Ways to Kick Your Year into Creative High Gear, Mary Beth sets out an action path from the resolution fizzle effect to courageous creative prowess.

1. Wary of “leaping?” Try creeping – Try easing into changes.

2. Get some new material – Fill your senses – sights, smells, sounds, touch - and see what kind of connections start to emerge.

3. Play against type – Balance your skill set by polishing up the parts that aren’t flowing as well.

4. Take a lover (not literally) – Join forces with a partner-in-crime/cheerleader/sounding board who is also working toward a goal.

As Mary Beth, founder of Kick Ass Creativity, says, you have to start somewhere. Just begin.  Enjoy this article and the creative courage that flows from it!

Social Media for Good? It is possible.

17 Dec

Mashable, a fabulous little blog {tongue and cheek, it is HUGE}, is the net’s top source for news in social and digital media, technology and web culture, i.e. the go to spot for THIS blogger for all things bloggish and social media related.  I have no idea where they get all their content but I bow in reverence to their web awesomeness.

With all that said, I’d like to share a recent story that came across my computer monitor…ok ok I was playing around on Facebook while at work….anywho Cindy Lu Who (this that time of year after all). Social media is and should be about the social part; let the media just be the vehicle….the social part is the human part, it exposes us to new ides, helps us discover and maintain connections, it opens the doors to opportunities previously closed, it brings the other side of the world to your front door…and it also can be a force for good.

Zachary Sniderman over at Mashable put together an informative and thorough article, 75+ Ways to Do Good With Social Media. It seems the perfect time of year to unveil this treasure trove of Do Good Resources, which range from phone apps that fight poverty to online fundraisers for non-profits, from the It Gets Better Youtube campaign to helping businesses invest in social good.

I say it all the time, social media and technology is the wave to ride…it is so much more than just hanging out on the computer chatting with friends…it really is a game changer for so many good reasons. So dive right in, the water is fine….My Mom’s Guide gives it a thumbs up!

If YOU could create a social media campaign for good, what would  it be?

Social Media: Huge, and Here to Stay, by Samantha Murphy

6 Dec

Here at My Mom’s Guide, we often hear, Bah, Social Media, a fad, a phase, it will never last. But the truth is this the future…it is a reality for everyday business and communicating for here on out.  I found this fabulous article from Tech Daily News and I knew I had to share it. I did not write it, Samantha Murphy did am not taking credit for it, thanks Tech News Daily,  but wanted to make sure you got a chance to read it. Who would have guessed that social media has overtaken porn as the number one activity on the Web?

Enjoy. Werd to yer mutha.

Social Media: Huge, and Here to Stay

By Samantha Murphy, Senior Staff Writer, Tech News Daily
28 July 2010 9:00 AM ET

If you think social media is just a bewildering fad that will go away if you wait long enough, here are some things to consider:

  • 1 out of 8 couples who got married in the United States in 2009 met via social media.
  • Social media has overtaken porn as the number one activity on the Web.
  • If Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest behind China and India.

“Social media is not only growing, it’s absolutely here to stay,” according to Erik Qualman, author of the best-selling book, “Socialnomics: How social media transforms the way we live and do business” (Wiley Publishing, 2009), which breaks down the power of the medium with the help of real-world examples.

For those out of the loop, social media sites – such as blogs, social networking sites and photo and video sharing platforms — have predominately user-generated content, encourage interaction and collaboration between users and integrate easily with other sites.

As another example of social media’s influence on modern culture, Qualman says YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, and every minute, 24 hours of video is uploaded to the site.

Adoption rates

The rate at which social media sites are expanding is faster than ever before. Facebook announced last week that it registered its 500 millionth member, doubling its user base in just one year.

Meanwhile, social media newcomer Four Square – a mobile social-gaming application allows users to “check-in” at venues to inform friends of their whereabouts – recently announced that it has 2 million members, only three months after it acquired its first million users.

“People are adopting this type of technology into their everyday lives at lightning fast rates,” said Dallas-based social media consultant Giovanni Gallucci. “The need for these platforms may have always been there, but the vehicle to provide such content did not. High-speed Internet didn’t exist just ten years ago.”

It’s the combination of broadband connections, smartphones and even devices like the iPad that are allowing social media sites to boom, he added.

“Although many companies like Microsoft had e-tablets out for years, the concept didn’t really take off until Apple stepped in at the right time and created the iPad at the right price point,” Gallucci said. “When automobiles first came out, most people couldn’t afford them even though the need for a car was always there. It wasn’t until production became less expensive that real adoption occurred.”

The adoption of these relatively low-cost tech devices is helping to support the growth of social media. In fact, some mobile phones are even coming pre-loaded with Facebook and Twitter applications.

“Consumers carry their phones with them everywhere and this makes access to social media sites even more ubiquitous,” said social consultant Jacob Morgan of Chess Media Group.

Changing the way we live

The thing that’s so powerful about social media is that it affects the day-to-day life of so many different people with different backgrounds, Qualman said.

“For example, studies show that people now value what their Facebook friends think of a product or brand more than what advertisers are saying,” he added. “Some companies are already taking advantage of this trend.”

For example, travel reviews site TripAdvisor allows Facebook members to get city and hotel travel suggestions directly from their pool of online friends via the “TripAdvisor – Cities I’ve Visited” Facebook application.

“This is taking online reviews and recommendations to a whole new personalized level,” Qualman said.

Moving forward

As for the term “social media,” Gallucci says it will likely fade out of our vocabulary in the next 12-18 months.

“It’s just going to become such a main thread on the Internet,” Gallucci said. “If you see a site that doesn’t have an element of social media to it, it will just look unfinished.”

Meanwhile Qualman predicts that social media will take its next big leap into the e-book industry with the growing adoption of iPads and e-readers.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if companies start a big advertising push into the e-book space,” Qualman said, adding that instead of having the word “soda” featured in a novel, “Coca-Cola” could be used instead. “Tracking data could gauge how many people were reading that e-book page as though it was an ad impression.”

Qualman also believes a natural step for e-books will be to embrace interactivity. If an e-book page mentions a museum or restaurant, a reader could click for pop-up images of an art exhibit or be directed to the diner’s menu, he added.

And finally, social media and e-books could mix more than ever in education, as students opt for digital text books over heavier tangible ones.

“My guesstimate is that companies will start tracking which students get a 4.0 and be able to ‘share’ the notes they write in their virtual margins to help others,” Qualman said. “Privacy issues aside, the technology exists – companies just have to work out the details.”

The bottom line: Social media’s seen nothing yet. “There’s just so much more to come,” Qualman said.

Twitter wha…Twitter who…Tweet this!

13 Nov

What the hell is Twitter and why should you even care, Mom?  Well, in the grand scheme of things, you shouldn’t but if you want to catch the wave of the communication future, then this is a good one to ride.

Truth is, I resisted for a long time; who really cares, who would listen to me, what would possess someone to care where I was headed or what I just ate…and with a picture? The world is becoming increasingly disconnected in its search for superior connective technology.  Email is the push of a button, the Internet is the Library of the Universe and then some, our phones are jacked up with apps and downloads and shopping lists that auto update.  AND YET, Twitter, that play-by-play announcer of daily activity, has an odd connecting quality, part voyeuristic, part narcissistic. Strangers are allowed to virtually and literally tap into personal, professional, political lives of others who respond in kind, as if dear old friends. And the strangest phenomenon is that people take it seriously. When Lady Gaga tweets, (tweet = posting a message) to Sen. Harry Reid about Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, you have more than just a play thing on your hands.

So here are the Twitter basics:

Sign up for an account… easy peasy.   Name, email address, BAM, you are on Twitter.

PAGES you need to know: Your HOME page lists all the messages from all the people you follow. Your PROFILE page shows only the messages you post. You can also add a little description about yourself, change your background page, add a personal website, etc.

POSTS: Posts are called Tweets and they are 140 character messages you write in the window found at the top of the page. Once you hit the TWEET button, your message shows up immediately on the HOME page of all of your FOLLOWERS.  The beauty of Twitter for businesses, issue campaigns, politics and events, oh yeah, and regular people is the ability to link directly to Facebook and other social media accounts, websites, interesting articles and internet goodies using these posts.

FOLLOWERS vs. FOLLOWING – There are two types of people on Twitter…those who follow you, FOLLOWERS, people who want to know what you have to say and those you follow, FOLLOWING, people you want know what they have to say.   To follow someone, you simply click the FOLLOW button on their profile page and you are immediately privy to their tweets.

EXTRAS: You can also receive and send personal messages with the same 140 character limit,  join lists tweeting about certain categories, retweet (retweet = repost someone else’s message) and view tweeting trends worldwide.

It is really that simple.

At this point the possibilities for connection are limitless; in fact you may get sucked in and lose a few days of your life waiting for the “1 new tweet” message to pop up.  But go ahead, sign up.  Follow some people you know, check out their followers and follow them too.  Try seaching for people you know, you never know what you will find, locate lost friends, locate lost friends of lost friends, follow your favorite Hollywood star, build a network of like minded people. Businesses and web marketing firms, small start companies and online businesses are thriving on Twitter because of its ability to reach beyond the reachable and take advantage of networks upon networks upon networks.   If my measly 115 followers retweet my simple message “Check out my new blog, My Mom’s Guide” to each of their 100 followers, equaling 11,500 new sets of eyes, each of whom retweet the message to their 100 followers, then we have 1,150,o00 people reading this fabulous blog.  Not likely but you get the point and a daughter can dream can’t she.

So maybe you don’t care to get this involved with people’s lives in this way, but let me put it this way, world revolutions have been aided using Twitter, Moldova and some say Iran, books have been written using Twitter, political careers have thrived or died a quick death using Twitter, dare I say it, Palin’s endorsement machine always starts with Twitter,  millions have been made with this strange social being called Twitter.  Now you know…don’t believe me, here is some recommended reading.  How Twitter will Change the Way We Live By STEVEN JOHNSON

With that said, hope you sign up and follow My Mom’s Guide as well as de Lovely Affair.

Save the Words.org, an internet game changer for words of old…

12 Nov

Out with the old and in with the new…apparently in the need to make room for words like bromance (a close but non-sexual relationship between two men), chillax (calm down and relax), automagically (automatically and in a way that seems ingenious, inexplicable, or magical) and soul patch (that little patch of hair men grow under their bottom lip), the keepers and king makers of the dictionary world felt the need to do away with old favorites like veprocose (full of prickly shrubs or bushes), tortiloquy (crooked talk or talk, 1656), snollygoster (shrewd unprincipled person, especially a politician) and panchymagogue (a medicine thought to expel all unhealthy humours from the body) in their printed edition.  They in fact added these 30 doozies to their newest edition.

What kind of society have we become, where old words, having fallen out of use, are kicked to the curb and banished to online editions only?  The wise words, hard working class words are unused, unloved and unwanted with only about 7,000 words making up 90% of everything we write today.*

Well have no fear, the Internet is a potential game changer with Save the words.org emerging as a champion for words of old.  On Save the Words, you lovers of words have the chance to bring back almost extinct terms from the boneyard and restore them to their rightful place on the hallowed printed pages of Merriam, Webster and Oxford next to recently crowned LMAO (laughing my ass off), hockey mom, vuvuzela and defriend (as in not be my friend on Facebook).

Words of yonder year speak plaintively to you from the site’s main page, Over Here, Choose me, Oy Oy, Yo Pick Me, Yes Yes Me, as the clickable words literally pop out of the page in hopes of being noticed. With that, Save the Words asks you to do a few simple things:

1)Adopt-a-Word, in essence, adopt soon to be extinct words, promising to use them as often and in as many ways as you can.

2) Spread-the-Word, asks that if you love these left behind words, find room for them in conversation and written communication, integrating them back into active use.  They suggest pet names, graffiti, tattoos, and scrabble but also the more serious, email, letters, meetings, and text messaging.

I fear the vacivity of the English language for generations to come were these words to disappear without a fight. Our collective hirquitalliency is surely louder than that of  frenemy and staycation. With our sarcinarious votes, we further serve humanity as never before.

Go forth and Spread the Good Word. My grandfather would surely love this idea.

You’ve got Social Media Questions? We’ve got easy answers.

25 Oct

I know, for generations older than I am, there are lots and lots of flummoxing social media “things” out there, they confound, they confuse, they just don’t make sense. Why in the hell would someone what to describe their every move in 140 characters or less for the entire world to see? Twitter.  What is the difference between a Top Feed and a News Feed, a Page and a Profile? Facebook. Linkedin, does what again?

What about pop culture; are you clueless there too? Who is Justin Beiber and why is Lady Gaga wearing a meat dress?  Technology, why is google taking over the world ( I can’t answer that) and what is an AdWord? Where do I get one? Wait…I don’t really need one? Oh. Sigh.

If you have no idea what I am talking about then this site is for you. BUT the best way for me to help you is get your feedback about what you find confusing. It could be a simple, straightforward answer: Facebook, or it could be a War and Peace sized complaint about the internet and email.  These Guides depend on your input.

So, for all TWO of my subscribers, perhaps you can forward this blog onto your family, friends, peers, network, colleagues who you think might be in a simliar, confusing boat.  The more suggestions I get, the more helpful I can be.

The bottom line is social media is and can be accessible to everyone, no matter your age, however computer skills are required.  It is definitely a generational gap…my mom would rather go to the library and kids younger than me download books on their Kindle, never stepping foot inside a library except maybe for free internet when their iPad battery has run out of juice. It really is all a matter of what you have grown with, how you are used to seeing the world and interacting with technology. It is all teachable and it is all learnable.

So comment away down below and let’s get this thing started.

How to Use Facebook….that internet social media thingee…Intro.

10 Oct

So I started this blog to help my mom understand things like Facebook, Twitter, and today’s pop culture.  Facebook’s popularity is rising with the over 50 crowd and at the box office with the new movie “The Social Network”.  It seems appropriate that the first “guide” of My Mom’s Guide should be a quick tutorial on How to Use Facebook.

MY MOM’S GUIDE TO USING FACEBOOK

Feel like everyone is on Facebook these days, your children, high school menace, co-workers and everyone in between?  Friend me, fan us, find our page on Facebook….well if everyone is doing it, it shouldn’t be that hard, right? Right. Read on and in no time you will a Facebook fixture.

Let’s start at the beginning:

Facebook was launched in 2004, originally limited to college students. It has since sky rocketed in popularity, becoming the largest social networking site with over 500 million users worldwide.  Imagine one in fourteen people on the planet tooling around Facebook.

A social network service is defined as “an online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people; essentially consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Wikipedia

Used primarily for social purposes, Facebook is about connecting people, keeping up with or snooping into the lives of friends, reconnecting with old ones – my best friend from when I was 5 years old found me, sharing photos – uploaded instantly from your phone or after the fact, and interacting with others who have similar interests. It has also become a playground for businesses promoting their wares, professional networks recruiting members and social and political campaigns aiming for more visibility and impact. From Barack Obama’s updates to campaigns to stop stoning women in Iran, groups dedicated to environmental causes, to those enjoying the sweet tunes of the music festival circuit, with such a wide variety of members, there is something for everyone.

In this series, I will explore the most important elements of Facebook as well as the ones that seem particularly confusing according my Mom. Next post My Mom’s Guide will cover the NEWS FEED. So stay tuned.

In the meantime, here is an interesting article discussing social media’s impact on communication in this day and age.  Check out the highlight of the NEWS FEED.

The Truth – Older Adults Love Facebook

23 Sep

Social Networking Use Doubles Among Older Internet Users

While young adults are the heaviest users of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, older users over 50 are starting to catch up. According to a new report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 47% of Internet users between the ages of 50 and 64 and 25% of online adults over 65 now use social networking sites. Compared to just a year ago, the number of Internet users over 50 in the U.S. who use social networking services has nearly doubled.

Older Adults Love Facebook – Twitter Still Lagging Far Behind

The Pew report also notes that the number of older adults (50-64) who use Twitter or another status update service doubled from about 5% to 11% over the last year. Seniors (65+) are still lagging behind in the use of status update services, but while only about 1% of them used Twitter regularly in 2009, this number has now grown to 6%.

No matter the growing popularity of social networking services among older users, email and online news sites are still far more popular than Facebook and Twitter among this age group. Overall, 92% of all older adults and 89% of all seniors send or read email daily. With regards to online news gathering, 76% of older adults get their news online and 42% say they do so daily. Among seniors, about 62% look for news online and 34% say that they do so daily.

Original Post By Frederic Lardinois

So the numbers say eventually my mom will get there.  I guess it is all a matter of perspective and priority.

To Facebook Fan or Not. And so it begins….

23 Sep

This is my mother’s fault. I asked her to LIKE one  my pages on Facebook, to become a FAN.  Her email response to me, ” I want to be a fan but I don’t know how to be a Fan. I keep pressing the like button but they still won’t let me be your FAN!” I then spent the next three comment trying to explain how to LIKE a page before I realized she already did like it. Ugh.

Chalk it up to forgetfulness or operator error, one thing became glaringly obvious: my mom needs an easy guide to understand Facebook, probably Twitter,  Android phones and Hollywood divas as well.  Mind you, my mom is brilliant, in fact with an EdD, I really should be calling her Dr. Mom, but she doesn’t roll that way.

It is a rite of passage for a mother to share the secrets of the world with her daughter, passing down advice generation to generation. I have decided to do it in reverse, pass UP the family line all my worldly understanding of things that her generation just doesn’t get. Not everyone, but for many, social media, technology, and even pop-culture is increasingly and rapidly elusive. There really is a generation gap, waiting to be filled.

So here you are, My Mom’s Guide to…whatever she needs a guide for and then some.  Advice from a 30 something daughter to her ‘in need of some generational understanding’ mother. With love.
